WW2 sniper rifles

#1

Post by red » 04 Nov 2002, 09:50

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum. I'm desperately looking for any available info about the German, Russia, US and English sniper rifles used on WW2. I mean: texts, technical manuals (of both rifles and scopes), photos (hystorical or not).

I found this site (the following link is an example of a ZF41 scope):

http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Heer/photos/H11846.html

to be very good (although it's a sales site) -- it has very detailed photos/description of the items it sales.

Thank you very much in advance.
BTW: does anyone have a good photo of a Vampir IR sight (or a schematic, anything), please?

not sure of sites, but I can tell you the Germans used Mauser rifles with large scopes attached to the iron sights

Hi Red

Just thought you might be interested in this silenced sniper rifle. I apologise in advance for the fact that I had to chop the photo into two sections.

The G-43 sniper rifle

#8

Post by Douglas Jr. » 15 Dec 2002, 16:14

Hi,

One of the rifles used by the Germans in late WWII was the semi-auto G-43 (later renamed K-43). They were issued from the factory with the rail to fixed a ZF4 scope.

Following are some images of the one that I own.

Regards,

Douglas.

Hi all
This is my first post in this great forum.

The silenced Winchester 74 rifles were also used by the OSS according to this link http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Zone/83 ... quip1.html
Unfortunetly the link doesn´t give any information if this rifle was used in combat/OSS operations.

Thank you. I saw on quite a lot of sites a mention about a 5x scope, named Zf42, which was used with the K98K rifles. However , i couldn't find any other info on it, not to mention a picture.

Any ideea what is with this scope?

Seeing that G43 reminds me (perhaps this is also relevant for the movies and games section) that the G43 is the high point of a film called "suddenly".

Frank Sinatra as a deranged WWII vet turned hitman bent on assassinating the president of the United States.... Does life get any better?

There are some interesting views of, and comments made about the rifle in that film.

Scopes

#12

Post by Douglas Jr. » 18 Dec 2002, 03:26

Red,

I never heard anything about a 5X scoped. Not even a Zf42. Germans only used scopes with 1,5X (ZF41, a short scope mounted over Mauser 98k rifles, issued to frontline troops), 4X (ZF4, used with the G/K-43) and 6X (the long scope that were issued to the Mauser 98k).

The last two were issued to specially trained snipers. Source: "Uniforms and Traditions of the Wehrmacht" by John Angolia and Adolf Schilicht.

Hope it helps you.

Regards,

Douglas. 8)

Hi all

The following scopes were used according to "Infantriewaffen Gestern" by Reiner Lidschun and Gunter Wollert:
4x Zf-39 early in the war
Zf 41 and Zf 40 1.5x
4x Zf 4 also called Zf 43 for the G43

according to "Waffen und Geheimwaffen des deutschen Heeres 1933-1945" by Fritz Hahn a 4x Zf-42 existed, demanded by the "Waffenamt" in 1942; unfortunately there are no additional information about use and production of this scope, but I don´t think it was produced in large numbers or even left development status

I´m not sure about these 6x scopes (hunting scopes from civil sources?).

scopes

Post by gabriel pagliarani » 20 Dec 2002, 15:15

..the scope in this photo is a Weaver 6x .22 LR model produced in Texas till 1959. Good sight, extremely accurate but too much close to the eye.The adjustable sight is studied for .22 L.R. "sport" carbines, if you try to shoot with a wider diam. gun having mounted it, surely you'll bring at home a painful black eye, loosing easily alignement. In my opinion this light .22 American sport carbine (Marlin? Winchester?) could not be a reliable weapon.
