Paul,

Just after the previous post, I went to the Non-Axis Equipment Section and was surfing and found this:
http://www.rememuseum.org.uk/arms/submachg/armsmg2.htm
Look at Weapon #183, also # 186.

Jack Nisley

Is this a great site or what???

MP34(ö)

Jack;

Thanks for that link. Hogg does not have that weapon in his book. It and the MP28/II are very similar. The MP34/I and /II are distinctly different.

By the way: to make ö you hold down the "alt" key and type 148 on the keypad numbers(the square set on the right side of the keyboard)

ä = alt 132
ü = alt 129

There is also a set such as "alt 6029" which also gives the same accented letters. If you play around with those numbers you'll see them.

Paul

The SMG is the Austrian Steyr-Solothurn MP 34 (Ö). A major difference between the Bergmanns and the Steyr was that the Bergmanns had the recoil-spring in the receiver while the Solothurn had it in the wooden butt around an extension rod attached to the breechblock. Note on top of the magazine-housing in the picture, a slight ridge protrusion. This was an inbuilt 'loader' for the magazines - they were inserted from below and the loader accepted 8-cartridge clips originally intended for the Steyr M12 pistol that could be pushed down in the magazine - which held 32 rounds of mostly 9mm Steyr cartridges. Some were altered to 9mm Luger and only few had a bayonet attachment, I believe.

yup thats definitley a mp34(o). If you would like some more detail on this weapon or other smg you should check out mike ingrams The MP40 Submachine Gun.

Im not quite sure about the bayonet attachment but the cooling holes on the barrell match that of the mp 34 (o) and MP 28 Built on the Schmeisser MP 181 Design. 8O

The MP 34(o) was originally known as the Steyr Solothurn SL-100 and was an austrian creation that was mainly produced in switzerland. when the germans took over the state of austria in 1938 they also took over the ausrtrian army armoury and gave the weapon its more recognizable name.
