Re: Solothurn MP 34 anybody historical expert ???
SORRY, DAVE...
THE MP34 IN QUESTION HAS NO MARKINGS OTHER THAN SERIAL # ON STOCK,BARREL,RECEIVER AND BOLT ALL MATCHING. HAS SLIDE SAFETY ON TOP OF RECEIVER AND SERIAL IN THE 6000 RANGE. CAL. 9MM STEYR. ALL ORIGINAL AND NOTHING GROUND OFF AND VERY GOOD CONDITION. WHEN DID THE SLIDE SAFETY GET INTRODUCED. TRYING TO LOCK DOWN A YEAR OF MANUFACTURE . AS IT HAS NO MARKINGS...SOUNDS LIKE A SNEAK GUN. SWISS ? STEYR ? HAS ANYBODY DOCUMENTED SERIALS ON THESE GUNS ? INFO ON THE NET IS TYPICAL AND VAGUE.
THANX. RON.

Re: Solothurn MP 34 anybody historical expert ???
AFIK there was two users of Steyr "MP-34s" (more correctly: Steyr - Solothurn S1-100) in 9mm Styer caliber - one was Austrian Police and another Greek Army. Both of these versions should be properly marked.
However, there is a third option: during WW2 some "non-official" version was used in Croatia, called "Askerica". Even Croatioan sources are scarce about this weapon - some says it was produced there, but I suspect that was some kind of "assembly mostly" limited run, using parts bought (smuggled?) from Austria (Switzerland?), of course with some kind of German assistance/approval.
(Photo: http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/1535 ... saktn3.jpg from http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... start=1515 )
Since this was small war-time production with dubious legality issues, I expect these examples were scarcely marked. 9mm Styer caliber was common in Croatia (due to the WW1 pistols) and Germans, because MP-34 of their production was in 9x19mm, probably had surplus 9mm Steyr barrels.
Needless to say, if this is "Askerica" indeed, that's awful rare find!

MANY THANX FOR YOUR ANSWER ! ANY IDEA WHEN THE SLIDING SAFETY WAS INCORPORATED ON THE RECEIVER COVER AS THIS WOULD NARROW DOWN PRODUCTION ERA ? THE SELECT FIRE SWITCH HAS DAUERFEUER AND EINSELFEUER LETTERS WHICH WOULD KEEP IT IN A GERMANIC SPEAKING TERRITORY.

Re: Solothurn MP 34 anybody historical expert ???
Die Maschinenpistole by F.W.A. Hobart has a photo of a short-barreled Solothurn S 1-100. It was tested in Enfield in December 1934 and the photo shows a top receiver safety. It would thus appear that the sliding safety was a military Solothurn SMG feature from the beginning. OTOH at http://www.haakons.com/vaapen/Mp/SSM30/SSM30.htm there are photos of the 9 mm Mauser M 30 Austrian police model in the 55xx range made in 1934 without the sliding safety.THE AWFUL EGG wrote: ANY IDEA WHEN THE SLIDING SAFETY WAS INCORPORATED ON THE RECEIVER COVER AS THIS WOULD NARROW DOWN PRODUCTION ERA ?

MANY THANX, MARKUS. DO YOU HAVE THE PIC FROM DIE MASCHINENPISTOLE, PERHAPS ? POSSIBLY A 6XXX SERIAL NUMBER COULD HAVE BEEN PRODUCED '34-'35 AS THE SPECIMEN I'VE ENCOUNTERED DOES NOT HAVE THE DATE MARKING OR THAT LITTLE CRUSTATION SYMBOL ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RECEIVER. THE MAGS DO HAVE THE CRUSTATION SYMBOL. ANOTHER ODDITY I'VE ENCOUNTERED IT ALL THE ORIGINAL 9MM STEYR AMMO THAT IS AVAILABLE IN THE YELLOW AVION SINOXID BOXES SEEMS TO BE 1935 PRODUCTION ??? MAKES YOU WANT TO GO HHHMMMMMM !

Re: Solothurn MP 34 anybody historical expert ???
Hi Ron,
Here's the Solothurn photo from Hobart's book. The barrel doesn't seem appreciably shorter than a normal MP 34 (ö)'s, maybe the UK test gun was short-barreled compared to the long-barreled S1-100 which found little acceptance. The stock with the odd concave comb is similar to the M 30 police MP.
Hard to say anything definite of S1-100 derivative serial numbers. It is quite possible that the M 30 and later versions were not in a consecutive serial block. E.g. http://www.deactivated-guns.co.uk/detail/MP34_2.htm shows a M/42 Portuguese contract gun with the #3233. OTOH I remember reading that the 1942 Portuguese contract guns were made using surplus parts.

Re: Solothurn MP 34 anybody historical expert ???
ALL THE FEATURES OF THE DEAC ARE IDENTITAL TO MY FRIEND'S. PERHAPS THEY WERE SERIALED TO THE PARTICULAR CONTRACT AND STARTED OVER. THE WAFFENAMT 189 WOULD BE AN INSPECTOR AT THE FACTORY,YES ? 189 SHOULD GIVE THE LOCATION OF THE FACTORY THAT MADE THE DEAC.

According to most code sites I looked at including http://photos.imageevent.com/badgerdog/ ... s/WAAE.pdf WaA189 was an inspector's code at Steyr-Daimler-Puch works in Warsaw, Poland.
