Italian Vickers 1911

Post by audrew » 22 Jan 2012 12:18

Vickers machine-gun mod. 1911
The barrel, although finned, was water-cooled (through a tube connected to a tank). Originally mounted machine gun rounds of caliber 7.7 mm (English model Mk 1), not suitable to the Italian front. Already adopted by the Italian war in Libya and ordered in a number of specimens in 1915, the weapon was modified for the 6.5 mm caliber using cloth tape loaders 250 rounds. Shoot accurately at 1000 yards (even though he had a range of 3500 meters) with a cadence of 400 strokes per minute practice. He often works on airplanes.

Barrel was cooled by water in the radiator and tube and tank were there to prevent most of loss of water. Steam from water boiling in the radiator went through elastic tube to the tank where steam condesed and water so preserved could be then poured back into radiator.
