Hmmm... Not sure what you mean.

But, if you are saying that kar98k was not produced for military use after WW2 - you are wrong. It was produced after WW2 (in Yugoslavia and for French in Germany) and is actually still produced today - in 2003 (same good old basic action for hunting rifles - using original Mauser machinery). And what other bolt-action rifles did come out of WW2 ?? - very few.

Used yes, like many others. But what bolt-action rifles were manufactured after WW2 ?? (BTW. Finns used M39 well into 60s, and manufactured some after WW2)

I own a Lee-Enfield No 4 Mk II that was made in the '50s for war reserve.

... and i would definately prefer MP44 over Garand - especially if i would saw two platoons of Ivans coming directly towards my foxhole.... :P

Anyway, if we are talking about best invidual firearm - i think Stg45 was developed far enough to claim the title.

Why you can reload the M1 faster, and it does not spew out bullets in uncontrolled fashion.

None of these German rifles made any difference to the war.

I take a real Machine Gun in that situation anyway, Mg42, .30 cal whatever.

That is not what I was saying at all, the Kar 98 did not get designed during WWII that is what I was saying.

Kar 98 is today still one of the best bolt action design ever. then only thing i would have with it is the brilliant mag design on the Norwegian Krag Jørgensen where you could lock the magazine and use only on cart that was loaded direct into the chamber

From all accounts i have heard of (and from the comparison of ammunition and weight of gun) MP44 recoil is very moderate, even less than AK - which is pussycat.

Overall - fully manageable in short bursts if shooter is up to the job. There is huge difference between firepower of MP44 and Garand in such situation - repulsing infantry attack in short range.

Agree. But for the fate of invidual landser - it could make hell of an difference in certain circumstances.

The individual Weapons

It was both FG42 and STG44-45. Many others weapons were fine too but if i have to choose between them, there will be my choice. With the fighting equipment at night called "Vampir" making them even a better edge against foreign equipments. Great ROF, durable, choice between semi and auto mode firing and you can put some accessories on it. :)

Since i haven't used any weapon from ww2, except the Mauser, i actually haven't got a clue. But it seems as if StG44 was a reliable and a good defense/offensive weapon. So i guess that's my answer. FG42 might have been quite good too, unless you had to change the "pipa" (dont know the word, but the part at the end, that u had to change when it got to hot and melt) as u had to do at the MG42.

Simple it's the MG 42

It's still used today in many countries as the main LMG in the original 7.92 x 57mm (8mm Mauser) and the 7.62 x 51 mm NATO

The Spanish have even designed a 5.56 x 45 mm NATO variant as a Squad Automatic weapon.

Although I think the HK 21E is probably the best machine gun around at the moment the MG 42 or MG 3 is sitll my favourite.

Let us not forget that the German tactics were based on the Machine Gun with a squad supporting the gunner. So most of the kills by small arms must have been done by German MG's 34's and 42's. (unbased opinion of mine and merely a guess)
