Curious machine gun housing

Post by kerryboo » 02 Apr 2020 17:22

Hello all,
I am not sure if this is the right forum for my question, but I am hoping there is a Luftaffe weapons specialist looking in.
Some years ago I acquired the relic remains of an MG17, along with all the parts came a strange and very rusted housing which I forgot about shortly after. With the lockdown I was looking for something to do, so I decided to look at the MG17 project. As said, I had not given the housing any thought. Looking at it now it seems very much to be some sort of flexible mount with trunnions on the front section, but the MG17 was very much a fixed weapon, so it is unlikely (?) to be related.
Does any one have any idea what the housing is for and where it would have been fitted? The feed chute looks very large for 8x57 Muser ammunition.
If not can someone point me to a more appropriate forum?

Try looking at the forums dedicated to German aviation.
I think this is the casing that covered the machine gun suspended under the wing.
