Any idea what MG this was? The original caption says "German troops preparing for a Russian counter-attack near Nikolayev".

Interesting german weblog about the history of the so-called "Tankgewehr / Panzerbüchse":

Thanks to you both!

I suppose this was more of an anti-material gun, than anti-tank. How effective could it be against Soviet (light) tanks, such as the BTs and T-70s and such?

Of course, it couldn't be used against a medium or heavy tank. At the beginning of war against Russia, 25 2o8 PZ.B.39 were used by German army. It had a perforation of armor of 25 mm at 300 meters. A modification called Granatbuchse.3o with a shortered barrel and an affixed Schiessbecher made him able to launch standard rifles grenades. One of them (318 type) was able of
70 mm perforation at 200 meters. So, this kind of weapon has the capability to destroy or made useless a vehicle like BT or T.70.
