WW2 German Shell Container?

Is this a WW2 German ammunition box or shell container? It measures 10 x 13 x 4 1/2 inches.

P.S. The garage of a neighbor here in Wiesbaden is full of them, the good man stores all his odds and ends from the last 200 years in these german
