I found a pic of an Gewehr 98 with a 25-shot-magazin, the text beside it said it was a special modification for the trench war during WWI. Were these really in action? Never saw this before. Did they modify some K 98 as well?
Thanks for any info

K 98 question
The 25 round trench magazine was indeed used during WW1. They are occassionally seen for sale and have also been reproduced in recent years. To mount the magazine only required the removal of the original magazine (5 round) floor plate and insert the 25 round mag which would lock in place. The additional weight and protrusion of the mag would have made the gun much harder to handle. As for use during WW2, I have seen no such information. In theory the mag should fit a K-98 though. If you are thinking of buying one of these, there tends to be feed problems with the reproductions. An original will cost you big bucks.
