"Ofenrohen"-Tank Destroyers

#1

Post by Andy H » 31 Aug 2002, 20:02

Apologies if this is a dumb question but what exactly does Ofenrohen mean, was it a certain type etc.

I came across this phrase in answer to JC's thread about 3rd PzGren Div in the Ardennes.

Hi Andy!

The term is "OFENROHR" and means stove-flue because it looks like one.

Christoph

Thank you as always for your prompt answer, though I'm still unsure what the actual Tank Destroyer looked like

It is the "Panzerschreck" or Raketenpanzerbüchse or Ofenrohr.

Andy :

I own a Panzerschreck 54 with a (special use permit since 1969).......what would you like to know about it ? I have to state that with an interview of two vets they mentioned the Ofenrohr was the wheeled version.....hmmmm. Thought this was the Püppchen ?

Could be - I've heard that name in connection with the Püppchen, but also with the Panzerschreck...

Does anybody know the pricerange for Panzerschreck?
I was offered one a short time ago. Seller may still have it, a friend of a friend, and none of us couldn´t figure the price to start bargain at.

Panzerschreck and Püppchen

Wasn't Püppchen the little 'junior Panzerfaust' - 25M range or something?

The Puppchen was a 8.8cm rocket laucher. I don't know about the range, but I would suspect it to be farther than 25m...

Price range eh ? About $ 1500 US now from what I have seen if you can even find one anywhere on the market. Of course you would have to expect that the muzzel and barrel tube would be punctured front and back and the coils removed to make it inoperative. What I find funny is that I have seen more defuzed Panzerschreck rockets for sale than the launcher itself........odd huh ?

As to the Püppchen, did think this was a Fallshirm device originally but not sure now, as it was an addition to the anti-tank companies of panzergrenadier regiments. Any one else have any info on this as my sources are quite old. Not very many produced from what I understand and that it had possibly a range a bit farther than the Panzerschreck.....about 150 yards maximum.

I don't find it odd that there are more rockets than weapons - after all, more rockets than launchers were produced ;)

Christian :

I think it is just the availability of the weapon and it's systems in the USA that is interesting. You are quite correct no doubt. Who has a scan of the Püppchen that they can share...... ?
