Re: The official AHF small arms quiz thread
The execution of Czar Nicholas II and Family?
Re: The official AHF small arms quiz thread
YES - Litvanian soldiers, selected for this task, were given Nagant revolvers and Winchester M.95 bayonets as "back-up" weapons. Murder od Tzar Family was very messy affair - at first, it seems everybody was targeting the Tzar itself, then the elders, and the children was shot last. After emptying the revolvers, executors had to reload them, because lot of victims were still alive (incl. prince and his sisters). New rounds were fired, but without ultimate success - later it was discovered that princesses had lot of diamonds hiden in their corsets. At the end, survivors were butchered with bayonets (probably some dead ones too, to be sure) - it is noted that diamond-reinforced chorsets could not be pierced even with the bayonet.zmija wrote:The execution of Czar Nicholas II and Family?
Over to Slovenia. (Me relieved for weekend )
Re: The official AHF small arms quiz thread
Interesting. The investigation of the murder-room in the Ipatiev house, after the Red's had fled, showed bullet holes and bullets in the walls from dozens of revolvers and pistols. Most common - were those of a ''three-line'' revolver (=Nagant 1895) but there were also holes from ''three-line'' pistols (= Mauser C/96), ''Three & half Line'' pistols (=Browning 03?) andselected for this task, were given Nagant revolvers
''Four & Half Line'' pistols (= Colt .45 Automatic).
They must have been lousy shooters - if they needed to finish off their deeds with bayonets - the tsar family was lined up on a sofa and beside it - about ten feet away

Re: The official AHF small arms quiz thread
Automatic pistols were owned by two Bolyshevik officers ("coordinators") - I have names somewher in my gun magazine. Less important one of them used .455 British Contract M.1911 Colt, and more important had TWO pistols - Browning M.1903 and Mauser C96. Later one boasted that he was the first to hit the Tzar (thanks to its round-in-barrel ready, single-action pistol - he started shooting with Browning).
There was 7 or 8 Nagant revolvers (can't remember the exact number), in both "officer" (DA/SA) & "NCO" variants (SAO).
BTW, ten feet is the "combat" distance where lot of handgun users began to miss a lot (mainly because of the stress caused by facing the "live target" - you're close enought to see the white in their eyes, yet far enough to displace the sights), especially if they were not trained with the short-barreled weapons. Self-defence experts suggest to shot with pistol at 5-6 feet for a secure hit - and to shot twice (for better bullet placement) in the "center of the mass".
(Gee, Edge, you're so morbid! )

OK, now we wait for Peeved with his 20-year supply of German gun magazines.
We'll see what he would dig up this time.
