named Stiller in Palestine

Post by stevebecker » 20 May 2019, 00:56

Mates,

Can you look up three officers I have named "Stiller" with Ottoman forces in Palestine during the war?

These are the only details I have?

Stiller Lt observer Airforce (FA) Jasta 300
Stiller Lt No 2 Tragbare Funk Station (Sig unit) 1916/17
Stiller Berhard Lt Pnr officer no details on unit? (1894-?) later WWII Col Pnr to Maj Gen 1944

Its possible there maybe two men named are the same, but any confirmation would help?

Danke for any help here

Hi Steve

I have the observer in FA 300 as an Oblt aD Stiller from originally GR 1. He apparently joined FA 300 after earlier been leader of the Turkish flying unit OFA 9. Before that he served in KG 4 but I dont knew which Staffel. He started as active officer promoted Lt 180812 mit P230810,Oblt aD 120216. What is noteworthy when promoted Oblt aD is that he did not loose any "time" in his promotion career.

As active officer he ought to be mentioned in this book : Franz v. Gottberg: "Das Grenadier-Regiment Kronprinz (1.Ostpreußisches) Nr.1 im Weltkriege.", (Erinnerungsblätter deutscher Regimenter: Truppenteile des ehemaligen preußischen Kontingents; Band 217), Berlin 1927-1929 (2 Bände),

I dont have a first name for him yet.

Gunnar,

Danke

Mate thank you for checking, I was thinking he may not be real.

Do you have when he joined 9th Sqn Tayyare Boluk (Aircraft Company - Ottoman Sqn) and when he joined FA 300?

The 9th Sqn was a Fighter Sqn based around Constanople and few mostly Fokker E 3's

9th Sqn was formed in Jan 1917 but the aircraft were operating before that date.

I have only Ottoman officers/Men in this Sqn and no Germans as yet?

I look forward to what you can find

Cheers

Hi again Steve

We need help from people like Glenn, Dave Danner etc who might have access to the book about his Regiment to come further with him. Essential is to find his first name to find further possible info in German archives. Stiller is a rather common name in Germany.

I dont have exact servicing date for him yet, but roughly he served in KG 4 during 1916, in OFA 9 during 1917 and FA 300 during 1918.

It apparently existed at least seven German flyers within OFA 9 throughout the War. I dont have good info Turkish flying units, it is merely a spin-off info from my normal research and info from other researchers.

Mate,

Thank you again for these details.

Seven known Germans in the OFA 9

Do you know any names?

I have the names of at lest 322 men who served with the Air units in Palestine, mostly air crew, but some ground staff. Many I don't have first name for or any details on them.

At lest 70 + men served in Ottoman air units.

Many Ottoman Sqn's had large numbers of Germans in them, like the 14th Sqn (OFA), which I have over 27 Germans, mostly aircrew, but some ground staff in it.

So names in 9th Sqn is interesting.

Cheers

Hi again Steve

I have some notes from a group of researchers who have studied the Turkish flying units, it is not my material. I dont know when they plan to publish it. One German pilot which came from Tobias Weber web-site, Uffz Warscheid served within OFA 9 during 1918.

I have seen lists like that the names of OFA 14 which you mentioned above. It is noteworthy that "they" cant spell a "single" German name correct  But maybe they have used original Turkish sources where the clerks were unable to spell/understand the German language.
