Liman von Sanders' father

#1

Post by Peter H » 26 Jun 2006, 13:47

This is appearing on some Turkish sites:
Due to ancestry (his father was the Jewish banker Isaac Liepmann), he was considered by fellow generals such as von Seeckt to be unfit to command a German corps.
As well as here: http://home.comcast.net/~jcviser/index. ... limanx.htm

Point to note--Seeckt's wife was Jewish so I cannot understand why Seeckt would hold such thoughts.

Appears to be a rumour at best?

Peter,

I am not aware of any Jewish ancestry. The then Generalleutnant Otto Liman was enobled on the 25th anniversary of the Kaiser's accession to the throne on 15 June 1913 taking the predicate von Sanders.

I shall be able to check a copy of the Offizier-Stammliste of Husaren-Regiment Nr. 6 which he commanded on Friday and hopefully this will give his father's name. Failing that a check of the relevant Gotha Genealogisches Taschenbuch will provide the answer.

Regards
Glenn

Peter,

as promised. Nothing there to suggest that Liman's father was called Isaac Liepmann! Carl Liman was an estate owner (Rittergutsbesitzer).

Glenn
