Mt. Cosna - Rommel - WW1
Mt. Cosna - Rommel - WW1
Does anyone have a detailed topographical map of that area?
Mt. Cosna is located at approximately 46.15N26.38E in Romania. The mountain is precisely between the cities of Grozesti and Tirgu Ocna. Grocesti is to the south of Mt. Cosna, and Tirgu Ocna is to the north of the mountain. The mountain has 2 river valleys next to it... also to the north and to the south... the Trotus River to the north/northeast, and the Ojtoz to the south.
Any help is appreciated... I have exhausted all "free" map options of the web and am going to resort to some satellite imaging for a "fee".

Sniperdoc,
perhaps this may be useful. It is a map taken from the regimental history of the WGB and shows the action at Deal Cosna in August 1918.

Olivier,
The initial offensive against Rumania did take place in 1916 but perhaps you might like to read something about the continued fighting that took place on the Moldavian sector throughought 1917 against Russian and Rumanian forces. The German Ninth Army and Gruppe Gerok mounted a major offensive against Russian/Rumanian forces in August 1917 which included the capture of Mount Cosna on August 11 1917 by the Württemberg Mountain Battalion. I would reccomend "Infantry Attacks" by Erwin Rommel as a good start.

Glenn,
You are absolutely right. I misunderstood this operation with the one done by Rommel in november 1916. Thank you for the explanation and suggestions provided.

Re: Mt. Cosna - WMB history
Hello Glenn,
You mentioned the WMB history and included the lovely map. How can I get hold of the history? And do you know if there is anything similar from the Romanian side? I'm using Rommel's account for an analysis job and just need to check the bits he's vague on - casualty returns, what unit he was facing etc. Any hints gratefully received.
