Re: General Hermann von Staab
Dear jwsleser, many thanks for sending me this scanned version so quickly.
Very interesting
this book is also key for Tsouras and Jones in their book "over the top, alternate histories of the first world war" and Heller "Gray tide in the east".
(Interestingly I believe a printed version of Staabs is available under:
http://www.diplomica-verlag.de/politik- ... 160778.htm
In any case glad you send me the scanned version!!)
Staabs confirms Ostaufmarsch was still possible early August 14. (but so many words to defend Moltke) However in his hypothetical considerations he points out if the Russians had noticed the scenario of a german "Ostaufmarsch" against their own expectations they may have changed their strategy towards defensive operations and withdrawal if needed. In case of such a Russian reaction a quick victory was out of reach for the Germans.
That leads us back again to the question why military planning of all powers before world war 1 was so bloody unrealistic and why Moltke on August 1st presented the Schlieffenplan as the only possible option? Moltke must have known better. Want to see what Zuber and Mombauer write.
Anybody any thoughts?

Jwsleser,
At the risk of exceeding your patience, may I also PM you about the von Staab book? I'm writing a bit of alternate history, and it would be invaluable.
