Critique of Solutions to Map Problems

A few days ago, I ran into a very nice description, written by Max Jähns, of the way that the elder Helmuth von Moltke critiqued solutions to map problems.

This leads me to wonder if there are any similar descriptions out there, whether of thoughtful, open-ended critiques of the sort provided by Moltke or of the much (and justly!) maligned Patentlösung ("patented solution.")
