Twelve Years for Killing a N.

Post by wm » 22 Sep 2019 07:34

Hitler says in Hitler's Table Talk:
Prince Arenberg, one of our earliest adherents, has told me many interesting tales of pioneering days in our colonies. He was once sentenced to twelve years' penal servitude - and served six of them - for having killed a nigger who had attacked him!
The answer to people who asserted that we were not good colonizers, he said, was that with the methods we tried to employ we could not get any colonies at all! And his opinion was based on a very considerable amount of thought.
Was he the real Engelbert-Marie (1872-1949), ninth sovereign duke of Arenberg and 15th duke of Aarschot, 4th duke of Meppen and 4th prince of Recklinghausen?

Did he really kill that man? Did he really serve "six of them"?

Engelbert-Marie actually was an officer in the 4th (Westphalian) Cuirassiers “von Driesen” (1889 to 1893) and then in Guards Cuirassiers (Prussia) (1893 to 1896).

Hitler says later:
Arenberg used to drive one of the oldest Benz cars I have ever seen ... And the man was a multimillionaire; but in this respect, he was as obstinate as a mule!
Engelbert-Marie was a multimillionaire.

In 2008 Thomas Weber said in his acceptance speech that:
the father-in-law of Duke Jean-Engelbert was the supreme commander of the First World War military unit [...]:
the 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment, in which Hitler fought in the Great War.

Not sure how accurate this info is, but according to this article (from 6 January 1900) his name was Karl Prosper, only son of Engelbert Arenberg, born on 12 March 1875. Apparently he got 3 years for murder in Deutsch-Südwestafrika. Details of the murder (according to the brother of the deceased) are in the article!

Nice find! It seems he really was Engelbert Prosper Marie d'Arenberg the only son of Engelbert Auguste d'Arenberg (properly 8th Duke Engelbert Auguste Anton Joseph Leon Wenzeslaus Balthasar Epiphanius Leonard Maxim Ghislain d'Arenberg.)

So the ninth sovereign duke of Arenberg, the head of the house of Arenberg, "great patron of the arts" really rode with Hitler in his ancient car (almost killing him and himself), really killed a man and lied about it.
