Winterfeldt's father oversaw the French surrender negotiations at the end of the Franco-Prussian war in 1871.I think this 'honour' was also behind his son being appointed as Military Attache to Paris pre 1914 to 'rub salt into the French wound'.
Winterfeldt himself was only a Divisional commander in 1918.The story goes that no General from OHL wanted the stigma of being involved in Armistice negotiations,so the nearest German frontline commander with a rapport for things French was grabbed for the task.In the irony of history another Winterfedt was thus involved in talking peace, but now from a position of weakness.

Generalmajor Detlof Sigismund von Winterfeldt (1867-1940) was a department head on the staff of the Chief of Staff of the General Staff of the field army in November 1918. Commissioned in the Prussian Infantry as a Sekonde-Lieutenant on the 17th of January 1888. His promotions were as follows:
Premier-Lieutenant: 27 Jan 1895
Hauptmann: 14 Sep 1900
Major: 22 Mar 1907
Oberstleutnant: 1 Oct 1913 M
Oberst: 18 Aug 1915 Q
Generalmajor: 18 Oct 1918 J
A pre war military attaché to France I believe he spent most of the war on the General Staff.

Glenn
