Thank you, Grassi.....I thought I was right in remembering they were the bicycle party, but I was by no means certain!

Now for a question to which I have a personal tie. My old editor and friend told me all sorts of interesting and nifty things about his father's service to Germany under the Kaiser and later. He was, among other things, Director of the famous Berlin-to-Baghdad Railroad. Can you name him?

Bonus points if you can name his greatest service to Germany.

--A hint is perhaps needed. In addition to being a Rail Baron, he also held office as Imperial Secretary for the Treasury, Imperial Minister of the Interior and Imperial Vice Chancellor.

Allo allo! You got it! Karl Helfferich it is. Or he is/was. As the case may be.

Do you perchance recall his greatest service to Germany? Regardless, the button is now on you!

Cheers,
Rob

hi, Rob,

as a (extreme) right-wing politician, AFAIK, he is definitely not my favourite.

His greatest servive may be (I´m no financial expert) his contribution to the introduction of the "Rentenmark" that ended the time of inflation ...

question to follow ...

hi,

Admiral Tirpitz "killed", in a dishonourable way, too, the career of an admiral commanding the Naval Academy as he didn´t want him to publish papers about naval policy which stood in contrast to Tirpitz` own.

Who was the victim ?

I´m living in a street named after him, therefore I know ...

Hiyas Pb.....you got it again. Helfferich was the brains behind ending Germany's post-WWI hyperinflation. He convinced everyone to put Germany on the gold standard, with the currency regulated by a central bank. Without that, it's pretty unlikely the inflation would have ended anytime soon. Did I mention he was also managing director of the Deutsche Bank at one time? Busy he was in his careers.

Fred (Karl's son) said that if his father hadn't been killed he would almost certainly have wound up Chancellor. He said that would also have kept Hitler out of a commanding political position. Helfferich's support from the right wing--especially nationalists, many moderates, AND monarchists put him on the nationalist/monarchal high ground, before Hitler grabbed it. He gave that group an option that wasn't Hitler and as long as he could deliver, he'd effectively cut the ground from under Hitler's feet. Adolf would have still been around, but he'd not have the support that eventually put him into power.

We'll never know what would have happened, but Fred's dad was certainly something out of the Weimar ordinary, and the Imperial ordinary as well. Admiral Muller, the Kaiser's Chief of Naval Cabinet, thought Helfferich had the best brain in the German government. Whatever the end result of Fred's thesis, could it have occurred it appears that German history in the 20's--and maybe further--would have been quite different.
Cheers!

He was active in economics, history, philosophy and several other fields but is especially well known for his work in sociology and he is often seen as one of the three principal architects of social science.
