18 active Jäger battalions existed in 1914,with the only increase during the war being the addition of the Finnish Jäger Battalion 27 and the 31st Jäger Battalion (on home service).18 Reserve Jäger Battalions were also mobilised in 1914,increased by another 12 Reserve Jäger Battalions when the 43rd-54th Reserve Divisions were raised after August 1914.
Compared to a normal infantry battalion of 4 companies in 1914,a Jäger active Battalion comprised 6 companies(4 rifle,1 Machine-Gun,1 Cycle).A Jäger active Battalion had also a motorised vehicle column of 10 vehicles, and 8 ammunition wagons compared to 4 for an infantry battalion.
The active 1st and 2nd Bavarian Jäger Battalions did not have an attached MG company, while Reserve Jäger Battalions were of only 4 rifle companies, with no MGs,cycles or motor vehicles. At a later date in the war they received MG support.
In 1915 all active Jäger battalions received a second cycle company, and in 1916 all battalions were allocated a second MG company and a Minenwerfer company. In 1917 21 of the 36 cycle companies allocated to the Jäger were withdrawn to form cycle battalions outside the scope of the Jäger establishment.
From 1915 onwards most of the Jäger battalions were regrouped into Jäger Regiments and allocated to Divisions.

Matt,
Thanks for that.Good to see your back on board.
The Australian Official History,Volume 5, mentions the Australians encountering the German Jäger Division at Villers-Bretonneaux in April 1918.
Roff, the messenger dog of the 1st Reserve Jäger Battalion, ended up an Australian 'captive',now residing in Canberra at the AWM Archives.
