The Kaiser's 'seventh son'

The sad tale of the Englishman Charles Edward, shipped out to Germany at the age of 16,to be trained for the business of running the duchy of Coburg. Not even speaking the language he was advised by Lord Roberts,'Try and be a good German'.
He went to the cadet school at Lichterfelde until he was commissioned in the First Foot and spent his weekends with the royal family in Potsdam...The rest of his life was a tragic tug-of-war between his English and his German heritages. After burning his bridges to Britain in 1914 he became Hitler's first convert among the princes and remained a stauch Nazi until his death in the fifties.
The Last Kaiser,Giles MacDonogh.
