Marcus,
Some brief details on the Assault Battalion are found in Hermann Cron's Imperial German Army 1914-18:Organisation,Structure,Orders of Battle.
It was raised in December 1916,an infantry sourced unit(unlike the 5th Battalion which was Pioneer based and badged, the 3rd which was Jäger uniformed).
It was attached to the German 7th Army which saw service on the Aisne-Laon front 1917-18.It was involved in the Aisne battles of 1918 but was badly mauled.Due to severe losses all Assault Battalions were reduced in late 1918 from an OOB of 2-3 assault companies,1 MG company and 1 Minenwefer company,to that of only 1 assault company,1 MG company,1 Minenwerfer company.

Primary source:
Fritz Ristow: "Sturmgrenadiere - Chronik des Sturmbataillon 7", Bonn/Mannheim, 1959.
Latecomer to the German troop histories of WW1, therefore often not listed.
And by the way: Can only recommend Jean-Louis Larcade's book on the storm troopers, not much about history and training, but a wealth of good and expertly commended pictures.
