I recently found some notes that my father had taken in relation to my great grand father's involvement in WWI. In these notes it mentions that he was a part of 10-5 Haubitten Gespante Artillerie (not sure if spelling is correct). I can't work out what this means and I was wondering whether this seems familiar to anyone? Unfortunately my father can't remember what this refers to. Has anyone heard of Haubitten Gespante Artillerie and does the 10-5 refer to a Regiment, Division or both?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
Tim

Howitzer Battery
Tim,
sounds like a misspelling for a 10.5cm Horse-Drawn Howitzer Battery:
Gespannte Haubitze Batterie.

I guess the correct translation is: BEspannte HaubitzeN-Batterie.
10-5 surely refers to the gun's calibre (10.5cm).
Glenn, you'll need more detailed info to find out about your great grand father's unit. In WWI basically all artillery units were horse-drawn, and 10.5cm guns were in widspread use in the German army.

Although focused on a 77mm piece, this link has some discussion and pictures of 10.5cm:

And this is said to be a model of a 10cm piece, giving a general idea:
