Sorry, overlooked the solution which was right under my nose, was Kap.z.S. Carl Tägert.

Gareth,

This solves indeed all of my questions ! :D Am I wrong or do you have quite some interest in the Marinekorps Flandern/Kaiserliche Marine ?

Thank you very much and best from Johan !

I know nothing of Marines or Navy. But could you comment on this picture? I do not know if it is a joke or if such an outfit really existed. It is marked on the back mounted mountain sailors.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Will check this unit later this evening, but I think it was Austro-Hungarian.

I believe Germany had it's own 'Reitende Gebirgsmarine'. Ad hoc units in it's Far East territories. I am lead to believe they were the subject of many jokes some as contradictory as 'Reitende Gebirgsmarine zu Fuß'. In that picture you can see the word selten under Reitende Gebirgsmarine, which means unusual.

Gareth,

I found some remarks about Berittene Marine, but nothing on this Gebirgsmarine, intriging thing, I've never heard of them, but I'm not that good informed on the land units, with the exception of the batteries at the Belgian coast in WW I. Any additional info appreciated !

The pic shows sailors from "S. A.(M?) S. ........" in Norway in 1911.

The 'Gebirgsmarine ' is a joke.
Before WWI, German ships went often to visit Norway.

In WWII, the Marine defenders of Narvik in 1940, called themselves also ' Gebirgsmarine'.

Regards,

Cnock
