Askari Records from the Colonies?
I am aware of only three memoirs / records by native soldiers and employees.
(Correctly, Askari is the Swahili designation for local soldiers only in East- and Central Africa)
»Mzee Ali, The Biography of an African Slave-Raider turned Askari & Scout«, Bror Urme MacDonell, South Africa, Jo-burg 2006 (English)
https://books.google.de/books?id=cRo1ga ... 2C&f=false
»Ali Mocambique. Bilder aus dem Leben eines schwarzen Fabeldichters«, August Hauer, Safari Verlag, Berlin 1922 (German)
https://www.ebay.de/sch/sis.html?_itemI ... 4096.l9146
»Der Bericht des Mzee Bin Ramadhani über den Maji-Maji Krieg im Bezirk Songea«: Swahili-Text und zeitgenössische deutsche Übersetzung
mit einem einführenden Kommentar, Ludwig Wimmelbücker, Swahili Forum 12 (2005): 173-195, 196-2013 (pdf, 31 pages, English + German)

Does anyone know any more records of local soldiers?
Cheers Holger

Re: Askari Records from the Colonies?
Yesterday I found by chance in a book about the Nyakyusa, a source reference to this topic that can even be viewed online now:
»Descriptions of the Swahili, from expeditions v. Wissmanns, Dr. Bumillers, Count v. Götzens and others.«
Collected and translated by Dr. C. Velten, Vandenhoeck and Ruprecht, Göttingen 1901. (pdf, 330 pages, German)
https://archive.org/details/schilderungende00veltgoog
Especially three stories shows former views of Askari and employees in German East-Africa:
• My journey into the interior of East Africa to the Tanganyika of Mwenyi Tsahnde bin Mwenyi Hamisi esh-Shirazi, page 1 - 55
• My trip to Nyassa with the Steamship Expedition of Major von Wißmann by Selim bin Abakari, page 56 - 115
• My journey through Africa from the Indian to the Atlantic Ocean as a participant in the expedition of Count von Goetzen by Abdallh bin Rashid, page 198 - 224
