Hi Peter,
Thanks for posting that link to the small webpage on Hankow. Does anyone know how big the German garrison was at Hankow?
Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris and other members

I don´t know how big the german garrison was.

Maybe the german garrsison was composed by german sailors of small german gunboats.

Look, photo of german sailors of VATERLAND gunboat guarding the door of German Consulat in Hankow.

Hi Cristiano and Christiane,
Thank you for the information and those links. I wondered if there was a detachment of the East Asian Marine Detachment there or something similar. But you're probably right, maybe there were just a few sailors there.
If anyone else has any more detailed info, please post it....
Cheers

The second photo shows British sailors as well. These photos of late 1905 were of the sailors sent to defend the Foreign Concessions at Hankow when student riots and strikes caused civil discord.

Well done Peter, does that mean that usually there was no garrison?

Chris,

There was no garrison. The photos show SMS Vaterland there in 1905.The link here( http://www.hmsfalcon.com/foreign/foreign.htm#german )suggests the Vaterland operated along the Yangtze on regular patol between Shanghai and Hankow. This was a 600 mile trip.

This map shows Wuhan at the meeting of the Han and Yangtze rivers.Hankow is now a suburb of this city on the northern bank.

Any trouble and the Vaterland was always in the vicinity.Morever like Shanghai a grouped International Concession(Britain,Germany,France,Japan and Russia in the case of Hankow) existed. This also suggests some joint police force operated there, most likely of chinese levies under British control(the first and main lease holder).

Regards
Peter

From ebay.de,seller dani-oli

Future PLM holder and UBoat commander Werner Fuerbringer in China.

Fuerbringer was aboard SMS Scharnhorst when it came under fire from batteries positioned along the Yellow River at the time.
