German bases in NA

Post by Lupo Solitario » 12 Jan 2007 19:49

Hi all

I've recently learned that German Navy had placed a submarine base in Misurata, Lybia during WWI...Do you know something more about it?

Dear Lupo,

as far as I know there didn´t exist any German naval base in todays Libya! The base of the German Navy in the Mediteranean was on the territory of the Ottoman Empire. The German submarines were based i. e. in Konstantinopel. Serveral times did they stay off the Libyean coast and set revolutionists ashore.

Yours

Markus

There was a support to the Libyan Freedom Fighters done by german submarines durign WW1. As far as I recall, the goods had been brought ashore in the marmarican town of BARDIA near the egyptian frontier. Together with this operations, the same german sub had shelled as well the british harbour fort (was not that big & important one) of MERSA MATRUH. However; e fully established naval base did not exist along the libyan shore at that time.
