I posted the following in the Wehrmacht at War & Peace, wrong area .

In my possession I have a German Army Officers collection, medals and lots of documents. He was killed in Russia 1944 His name was Oberst Friedrich Feuring.
He was born in 1893 and served in the German navy, before the outbreak of war in 1914 he served on the following vessels.
Koing-Wilhelm-Koingin-Louise and Otter.
All details are in his Wehrpass(The best Wehrpass I have ever seen with lots of information)
He was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class for the battle of TSINGTAU.in 1914.
I am at present doing research on this person and would request information on how to obtain period photographs of the ships mentioned above and preferably with sailor shots and pre 1914 if possible.[/b]

later, the germans named after the city (Tsingtao) one of the E-boats tenders.

I think the ship survived WWII.

best regards

In their occupation of Tsingtao, the Germans established and left for our gustatory enjoyment the best brewery in China! Excellent beer to this day.

Thanks for the fine pictures.

Gunboat at Tsingtao

#10

Post by Jon Sutton » 13 Apr 2003, 13:55

Hi Moulded,
The Gunboat in the foreground of that wonderful picture is one of the Iltis class gunboats. There were six in all, Iltis, Jaguar, Luchs, Tiger, Panther and Eber, all launched between 1898 and 1901. Unfortunately we cannot see the bows - Iltis and Jaguar had ram bows, the others straight stems. Only Panther and Eber were not at Tsingtao at the outbreak of war; Panther was in Germany (after the famous 'Panthersprung' in 1908 to Agadir) and Eber at Luederitz Bay in German South West Africa. The guns from Tiger and Luchs were used to arm the liner 'Prince Eitel Freidrich' which was then attached to Von Spee's squadron. The four ships at Tsingtao were all sunk during the siege and capture of Tsingtao by the Japanese.
What were the distinguishing features of the Scharnhorst from the Gneisenau which enable you to identify her in the picture?

That's what comes of not being able to see the picture when composing a message and putting foot straight into mouth!: it is pretty clear that the gunboat has a straight stem so must be either Luchs or Tiger.

Hello omaha,

some years ago you published some very interesting data concerning Tsingtao and the German Friedrich Feuring, who made his career from a gunboat sailor to a Wehrmacht colonel.

Are you still owner of the Militaerpass? I would be very glad to get more data about Feurings life for my website www.tsingtau.org.

Best greetings from Germany to South Africa
Hans-Joachim Schmidt
