Wulff honors Great War POWs

German President Christian Wulff on Thursday placed flowers at a monument marking a camp in Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture, for German prisoners of war captured during World War I.

At the camp, some 1,000 German soldiers were imprisoned between 1917 and 1920 after being captured in Tsingtao, China, by the Japanese military. Japan and Germany were on opposing sides during the war.

The POWs were allowed to engage in cultural activities, such as a newspaper publication as well as orchestra and drama performances. In 1918, they mounted the first performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in Japan.

Wulff, who once served as the premier of the German state of Lower Saxony, established a friendship agreement in September 2007 between his state and Tokushima Prefecture, and has visited it twice before.
