Missing Gun from the SMS Königsberg

By the way; - it is still a mystery to me why in every old British and Portuguese map the settlement of Mitomoni
was always shown on the Portuguese side of the border.

Uncle Ludwig was no better. One could almost suspect continued copy & paste in the pre-computer era.

Uncle Ludwig was no longer there, when the `Schutztruppe´ passed Mitomoni on the way back,
since he was seriously wounded (Headshot!) during the Battle of Lioma on August 31th, 1918.

Description: 4,1 inch Naval Gun - Length 13 feet 9 inches.From the Cruiser
"Königsberg" Marked Nr. 361 L.Fried Krupp 1905. Kg. 1918. London, England

(Seems to be a German description, otherwise the British used: United Kingdom?)


Furthermore it can be read on the sign hanging in front of the gun:

"4,1 INCH GUN CAPTURED BY THE ROYAL NAVY FROM THE GERMAN CRUISER KÖNIGSBERG EAST AFRICA 1915"

That's a great find Holger! I'm sure it's taken around The Mall in central London. I'll try to find the exact spot.

Pity that the gun could not preserved and that the scrapman eventually won the day.

Am I right in saying we have after all these years not yet had a volunteer brave enough to go and scratch the paint off the breech of the Mombasa gun to confirm the gun number??

Hello Kallag,

You must not forget that local police forces in East Africa do not operate as “so freely and democratically minded”
as in your `beautiful western countries´.

The official approval procedures would also not be any faster than yours; - but more expensive.

Could this be the missing Königsberg gun?
I found it 1985 in Entebbe Uganda. As far as I can remember the gun was marked with "Krupp"
The dimensions of the barrel are very similar, may be it was attached to another carriage.

Happy New Year all.

The Bundesarchiv Photograph collection includes images showing the recovery of the Konigsberg guns on the banks of the Rufiji.

Two photographs show the same picture, these being images BILD 134-C0326 and 134 C-0319.

In the background, rather faintly, the images show a vessel (not the Konigsberg) of substantial size, on the bank of the river and presumably near the wreck of the Konigsberg.

I am curious about this vessel...any idea of where I should be looking for more details of the gun recovery effort and which ship would have been part of the exercise? By most accounts, the guns have been taken to the Dar Railway workshops by land, ruling out the possibility of the ship assisting in this regard.

Wow, Holger, this is very well done and much appreciated....thank you for going to the trouble of identifying the steamer.

This also helps in clearing the caption of the attached IWM image which reads "German Steamer HEDVISCH or ROVUMA scuttled in Rufigi delta. This wreck was undiscovered until 1921"
