I noticed this coment on the other webb site;

Was made by Dr. Friedrich Fülleborn during a punitive Expedition of Premierlieutnant Phillipp Engelhardt into the Songea area in 1897.
Engelhardt impressed the Ungoni by demonstrating his firepower against shields

I wasat the Turkish Military Museum in Istanbul today and saw these very interesting early American machine guns.This one is marked, Improved Gardner Gun Manufactured by Pratt & Whitney Hartford Conn USA with 1880s patent dates.

Just a comment if you have seen my MG08 thread. Many of the MGs that are in this thread are NOT MG08 but MG01. Secondly the sled that was mostly used in Africa was the first pattern and not the normal schlitten. As per the image. Lastly I have never ever read or studied a barrel jacket that has been covered for camouflage purposes. Very few WWI images (British or German) show any water jacket being covered by 'anything' other than the German armoured jacket cover. But when it was, it was primarily for tactical carriage purposes. It did happen because period imagery shows it, but this was the bright idea of very few crews because the MG08 was often very static. Some imagery does show the water jacket covered due to cold weather, in order to minimise the water freezing. Noting that there was a barrel jacket heater item issued. Plus the jacket repair kit should not be mistaken as a form of cover. Anyway, canvas/asbestos jacket covers came into Brit service between the wars, not issued during WWI. There is no evidence to support the German Army ever issuing a water jacket cover, for handling purposes, WWI or inter-war.
