Tsintao Landsturm

Post by Chris Dale » 10 Nov 2004 21:48

Does anybody know anything about the Tsingtao Landsturm?
I know they were raised in Tsingtao amongst German residents to do police work and guard duties at the outbreak of war in 1914. And I've seen this one small photograph (below).
Does anybody know any more about them? Who their commanders were? How big the unit was? Was it divided into several units? What uniforms they wore? What weapons they had? And most importantly does anyone else have any other photos of them, or a better quality version of this one?
It's a tough one but any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Chris

As of May 1914, the German land forces available in Kiaochou were a permanent peacetime force of 15 officers, 30 staff employees, and III./SB of 30 officers and 1269 men. War time activations added 11 officers and 170 men, plus 19 officers and 755 men to the Matrosenartillerie. War time mobilizations added 76 officers and 1,400 men. The civilian police force added approximately 50 policemen. This force was led by Governor-General Kapitän zur See Meyer-Waldeck, Chief of Staff Kapitän zur See Saxer, and Adjutant Major von Kayser.

Thank you all very much for those links. Some I'd seen before but there there were a few photos I'd not seen especially in Xavier's folder. Unfortunatley none of them mention the Tsingtao Landsturm, which was a separte force not to be confused with the III. Seebattalion's reservists.
Anyone got any more leads, information or photos?
Cheers
