Re: The official AHF German Colonies quiz thread
Hi all
I guess it is my turn to ask a question?
In WW1 8000 to 10000 horses and mules were shot. Their bones still lie among the dunes
near Swakopmund DSWA. Why were they killed?
regards
DSWA

Re: The official AHF German Colonies quiz thread
Great question... that had me searching around for a while. I had never heard of this before, so I learned something new...

"Sixteen hundred and ninety five (1695) horses and nine hundred and forty four (944) mules were destroyed near Swakopmund in November / December 1915 on account of a glanders (horse decease) outbreak which occurred amongst South African Union Defence Force animals that had been moved down to the coast in October. Re: The official AHF German Colonies quiz thread
Correct, Waldzee!
" In June that year (1901), at the insistence of the foreign powers, the 18-year-old Zaifeng (Prince Chun) was appointed by the Qing court as a Special Ambassador to offer regrets on behalf of the Qing government to Germany for the murder of German diplomat Baron von Ketteler in 1900. In July, Zaifeng left for Germany by sea and met Kaiser Wilhelm II in Berlin in September. He also toured Europe before returning to China, becoming one of the first members of the Qing imperial clan ever to travel abroad."
