Hi Cristiano,
The last of the Cameroon Schutztruppe did indeed escape into Neutral Spanish Muni territory, where as under international law they were interned, which they found preferable to surrender to the allies.
In the British Official War History of the Cameroon campaign it is alledged that the Germans recieved supplies through Muni during the campaign. That would of course be against international law but nothing uncommon.

Muni was imortant for German communication and supplies. The Allies made several attempts to cut of the Germans from Muni. They didn't succeed and appr. 1000 Germans and 6000 German Askari's with family managed to reach Muni.

Why?

How interesting... How were the relations between Rio Muni and the German Colonies? The Spanish Colony was a hidden allied of the Germans rather than neutral territory?

I've just been reading "The First World War in Africa" by Hew Strachan and he mentions the Spanish forces in Muni numbered 150 militia, thus the Schutztruppe entering with several thousand armed men weren't really being interened as such. Just using the territory to escape from the allies. He also suggests in the book that the Schutztruppe recieved ammunition while there, so they were presumably just waiting out the war there in the hopes of a German victory in Europe.

Dear Chris,

I read this passage in the mentioned book, too. But in the unpublished German papers from Boell in the former Reichsarchiv there are no comments to this theory.

To my mind it might be possible that supplies of food crossed the border into Kamerun, but no ammunition or weapons. And if there occured such a support from the Spanish, it seems to me only on very low level. If there would have been huge amounts of it, the campaign would have lasted longer and the Germans won´t have the problem with shortage of weapons and ammunition. The Spanish tried to be neutral with the aim not to become involved in the war.

Hi Marcus,
It's always good to hear your well informed comments. I've just read the Cameroon section of Strachan's book again, and yes, it seems his information is that Aymerich, the French commander heard reports that the Germans had recieved ammuniton through Muni. As we know allied intelligence was severely lacking during this campaign, so it may well not have been true. Thank you for pointing that out.
Cheers
Chris
