Hi AKR,
That's a great pickelhaube, but I've been told that the customs units in imperial provinces such as Alsace and Lorraine wore identical helmets, so it's difficult to tell if its origins are colonial. Did the vendor include a photo of its issue stamp?
Cheers
Chris

The main reliable sources for material about the uniforms of the Schutztruppen are:

„Das Deutsche Heer - Friedensuniformen bei Ausbruch des Weltkrieges“
Knötel/Pietsch/Baron Collas, 2.Auflage Spemann, Stuttgart 1982

„Die Deutschen Schutztruppen in Afrika in ihrer gegenwärtigen Uniformierung“
LTR-Verlag, Starnberg 1989 (Nachdruck der Ausgabe Leipzig 1899)

A lot of material from this sources can be found at:

http://www.traditionsverband.de/

Just click on "Schutztruppe" on the bar on the left side to find it.

Herewith a photo of the pickelhaube worn in Alsace Lorraine by mounted customs police from a recent auction catalog .I agree it is very similar to the photo I posted before.
