Tanga defenses near the railway-irrigation ditch

Post by Cristiano de S.O Campos » 11 Dec 2005 20:55

Hi

During the invasion of Tanga in 1914, the German 17 FeldKompagnie put some machine guns emplacements near of the cut of Railway.

These cut had three bridges and a small chanell (irrigation ditch).

I have the book Ice Creram war -written by William Boyd and in the chapter about Tanga battle two english officers try to hidden in these chanell and had been covered by mudd to protect the bees attack.

Does anyone have one photo to these irrigation ditch?

Sisal plantations were the main crop around Tanga.I assume irrigation was used for this commercial enterprise. The Sisal hemp plant(used for rope making) was introduced to the region from Mexico in 1893.

Hi Cristiano,
Here's a couple of photos from Ross Anderson's book, the Battle of Tanga. I hope they're of help.
