Are those men members of the policetroop of Togo ???

Post by Karstenh83 » 17 Dec 2005 16:44

Hello Members of this wonderful site,

I have a photography which was send 1913 as a postcard from Lomé/ Togo to Germany. On this picture you can see some members of the german "Schutztruppe". Could those men be members of the policetroop of Togo or are those members of the "Schutztruppe" in Cameroon or German Southwestafrica????????

I would be very gladful if you can help me.

Best wishes

Karsten

here the picture, I hope it works. How can I put more pictures on this site????

Welcome to the forum Karsten.

Great pic!

You seem to have mastered the photo posting function OK so any other photos would be appreciated.

I assume any sea ships from or to DWSA put in at Togo or Cameroon as well so its hard to say the origin of these men.

Regards,
Peter

Hi Karsten,
That's a great photo, you're very welcome to post many more like that here!
As Peter said they could be from anywhere in Africa. The deciding factor would be if we knew the colour of the dark hatbands. It could be the red worn by the Schutztruppe of Cameroon (and police troops of Togo- although the coloured piping (blue) on the uniforms indicates Schutztruppe rather than Polizeitruppe), it could be the blue worn by South West African Schutztruppe (although from the photo it might be too dark for them), or possibly it could be one of a number of colours worn by colonial officials. The seated figure on the right looks like he might possibly have an eagle on the upper front of his cap, in which case he is an official. Other officials also wore caps with coloured hatbands and no eagle.
Anyone else got any ideas?...or other interesting photos?
Cheers
Chris

Hello PeterH and Chris Dale

thanks for your replies and welcome greedings.

I think the colour of the hatbands is red. I know, that the "Polizeimeister" of Togo worn tropical helmet or the cap with red hatbands. like the NCO in Cameroon. Those men can also be members of the "Schutztruppe" of Cameroon or of the policetroop of Togo.

I think that we can exclude, that those men are members of the "Schutztruppe" for GSWA, because the colour of their hatband is too dark.

Here a picture of a member of the "Schutztruppe" for GSWA, which was taken in Saxony / Germany.

Red band

Hi for all

Karsten, you followed my advice, congratulations and wilkommen!

Yes, that photo really is not of the DSWA, the darker hatband is well visible, but it possibly must be or of the Togo, or more probably of the Kamerun.

If you have more photos and doubts, will be very interesting.
