Italian Officers

#1

Post by yantaylor » 23 Aug 2017, 20:36

Hi every one.
I have been compiling a list of Italian divisions which served in WW2, so far I have kept the list small and only included these divisions.
6 x Alpini
3 x Armoured
4 x Blackshirt
3 x Cavalry
The main problem I had with assembling these 16 divisions, is the commanding officers.
I have found the names but the time they spent in their role as divisional commander is had to find, so far I have only managed to find the year, but alas no data on months and dates.
So does anyone know if there is a link on this site or any other which will cover these officers.
I was going to post up their names in this thread but that would take an age and it would put off many members.
So can anyone help?
Regards
Yan.

I just search that site for the officers who served in the 1. Alpini division, but they just give the years only, no months or days.
But thank you for the help Matteus.

Ok Matteus, I will start with the 1st Alpini and see how we get on, you never know we could be the only site on the web who have dated these officers in the proper way.
All I have is the years, no days and only the odd month.

General Paolo Micheletti (1937 to 1938)
General Paolo Puntoni (1938 to 1940)
General Giovanni Maccario (1940 to 1942)
General Lorenzo Vivalda (May 1942 to 1943)

Regards
Yan.

Hi Yan,
Here is what I have been able to piece together over the years for the Alpini divisions. As you so correctly state. it has been very difficult to find exact dates in many cases. Please note that the ranks shown are the last achieved by the officer in question and not necessarily that held during his command of the division. I'll take a look at what I have for the other divisions tomorrow, but it's late now, and I've just returned from a 6 hour drive.

Kind regards,

VJK

Here are the commanders for the armoured divisions, which are much better with the addition of the months, but still lack essential dates.

Centauro;
General Giovanni Magli - 1940 to February 1941
General Gavino Pizzolato - February 1941 to March 1942
General George Carlo Calvi of Bergolo - March 1942 to September 1943

Ariete;
General Carlo Vecchiarelli - February 1939 - 1940
General Ettore Baldassarre - 1940 to July 1941
General Mario Balotta - July 1941 to January 1942
General Giuseppe De Stefanis - January 1942 to June 1942
General Adolfo Infante - June 1942 to November 1942

Littorio;
Major General Annibale Bergonzoli - 1939 to 1941
Major General Gervasio Bitossi - April 1941 to November 1943

Hi Yan,

A few additions for you.

Centauro:
General Gavino Pizzolato: 23 Feb 1941 - Mar 1942

Ariete:
General Carlo Vecchiarelli: 1 February 1939 - 15 Nov 1939
General Ettore Baldassarre: 15 Nov 1939 - 12 Jul 1941
General Adolfo Infante: Jun 1942 - 25 Nov 1942

Littorio;
Major General Annibale Bergonzoli: 1939 - 15 Oct 1939
Bergonzoli took command of the XXIII Army Corps on 15 Oct 1939. I believe that Bitossi took over the division at that date, he was certainly in command by June 1940.

Best regards,

VJK
