Cesare Baduel

Post by AJK » 31 Dec 2019, 21:08

Prof. Cesare Baduel was President of the Italian Red Cross during 1920 - 1931, with a military rank of Tenente generale medico. I would be most grateful if someone could provide his dates of birth and death. Also his promotion dates to Maggiore generale medico and Tenente generale medico would be appreciated.

Thanks,

AJK

Sveiks Andri!

The only info I could find out about him was that he was born in Perugia in 1867 and died in Rome in 1953. The 1920 edition of the Calendario generale del regno d'Italia has him as a Colonnello Medico, he was still Colonnello in Jan 1923. He doesn't appear in any of the Bollettino Ufficiale. Sometime ago I was able to find this picture of him.

Happy New Year!

Valdis

Dear Andris,

Like Valdis I have been unable to confirm and promotion to neither maggiore generale medico or tenente generale medico.
Like Valdis I have been unable to find him in any of the Bollettino Ufficiale, nor is he listed my editions of Ruolo degli ufficiali generali (1934,1937 & 1938) which includes honorary and retired generals (Riserva and congedo assoluto). Not a regular officer, he is not listed in any of the pre ww1 annuario militare I have consulted.
I doubt that he held a generals rank in the army, though I noticed that from 1925 and onwards he is referred to as generale medico in various “civilian” publications. Wondering whether it was at title in the public health system?
Kind Regards

Hi Steen,

Thank you for your input. I have seen references* to Baduel as a colonnello medico in 1919 and 1920, so it would be logical to assume that he would be promoted to general rank during the 11 years after his appointment as President of the Italian Red Cross.

It is very surprising that he does not appear in any Bollettino Ufficiale or Annuario militare since he clearly did hold a military rank...

Perhaps he was a naval officer? I believe the medical service of the navy used army ranks?

That's a good suggestion, but unfortunately he does not appear in any of the Annuario ufficiale della regia marina 1903 - 1908.

maybe he was General in "Corpo Militare della Croce Rossa" , that is not strictly Regio Esercito . The uniform in photo is of a Colonel in Corpo della Croce Rossa , no of a medical officier of the Regio Esercito( the stars ao collar are withw the red cross only for Croce Rossa). The Croce Rossa ( and the " Corpo Militare dell' Ordine di Malta" also) aere medical corps auxiliary of Army but with his ranks.
