What is the machinery behind the soldiers in the photo? A gun? Some kind of equipment?

Yes, it's my grandfather. I'm looking up for more details but for the moment I have nothing, not even a date.

They might be leaning up against a “kommandogerät 36”.

And one more in almost same angle. See “drum” far right man is standing by and angle of tubing behind man 2nd right. https://www.lonesentry.com/manuals/germ ... ntrol.html

EDIT: New information, the photo is from 1942, on the small island of Bergeggi, near Genova. A local coastal "presidio", a defensive garrison.

The men are described generically as "artiglieri" or "artillerymen", so I can't say if it's coastal artillery or anti-aircraft artillery.

@Waleed Y. Majeed Thanks a lot! That's very useful!
