Italian Soldiers Settling in Australia

My dad recently told me that after the war, the Italian prisoners kept in Australia were offered the oppotunity to settle in Australia rather than returning to Italy. Does anyone have any information on this?

I read a book on Axis Prisoners of War in Australia about five years ago. Cannot remember the title or author sorry to say. Italian and German pows where held in Australia until 1947. Some applied to stay in Australia and where given residency. Other returned home and brought their families back to Australia in the 1950s.

Most of the Pows of European extraction came from the North Africa Campaign.
