they are all officiers of the MVSN and volunt. serving like simple soldiers for the period that stay in the unit . Was only a honor guard , never combat also when the duce was arrested By carabinieri by King order .
They wear a complete blak uniform with silver badge ( a skull with crossed swords). They also carried the personal standard of Mussolini ( blak with central gold fascio and white , red and green piping). they also have a special dagger and a Moschetto 91 rifle all painted blak with metallic parts in silver .

If you are interested in, the commander of the Moschettieri was a noble, the marquess Achille d'Havet.

Skorzeny had a medal awarded to this group,he claimed the Duce gave it to him.The medal was issued 1938,to commemorate 15 years in existence.

Curious name

for a regime so heavily inspired by Roma it is curious they didn't choose for this praetorian guard a title more in relation with Roman history like...Lictors, why not, it is the first term who seems me the most timely more than moschettieri

Musketeers...is something more connected with Armies of XVIth XVIIth Century and some royal guards

but above all it was the name chosen for the disciplinary penal corps of the Piemontese then Italian Army

I believe that they were called 'Moschettieri' because of the type of weapon they had, a Moschetto, or what is typically called a 'Cavalry Carbine' by collectors. This was a type of short carbine with an attached, folding bayonet that was widely distributed among Italian troops and was also used by some German personnel after the Allied-Italian Armistice of September 1943.

You should be able to find some photos of these with a Google search, but I can post photos of mine if you'd like. I don't have any of the body guard Moschettos, but I have German-captured examples.

Best,
Pat
