Post by JLEES » 29 Sep 2002, 20:45

Hello,
I have this Italian Social Republic card speaking about cowardice. Could anyone translate this into English and give me some incite into the card’s background?
Thanks,
James

James
The text means literally: "and if I wouldn't start too, it will be a cowardice". It's a line of a Italian Indipendence War period song (XIX Century) "Addio Mia Bella Addio" (Farewell My Love Farewell) which first strophe is

Addio mia bella addio
che l'armata se ne va
e se non partissi anch'io
sarebbe una viltà

(farewell my love farewell
cause army is leaving
and if I wouldn't start too
it will be a cowardice)

This song was a sort of hymn for indipendence war volunteers. Its employment by RSI propaganda makes an evident link between indipendence wars and WWII, claiming people to volunteer in RSI armed forces. The card shows a complete equipment waiting for its user...
