Kandalaschka or Kandalakscha ?

#1

Post by Panzerspitze » 22 Sep 2021, 15:29

I've heard both uttered in Die Deutsche Wochenschau, mostly associated with General Dietl's operations in the Hochen Norden. It's "Kandalakscha" according to wikipedia, but there are a few hundred hits of "Kandalaschka" on google. Is it just a common mistake, or are either version correct in German?

«ш» in Russian = «sch» in German = «sh» in English

Yes, but Germans write it with sch.
«ш» in Russian = «sch» in German = «sh» in English
but, the most interesting letter of the Russian alphabet is
the letter - "щ";
in English = "shch" - (four letters);
in German = "schtsch" - (seven letters).
I am just preparing for lunch a meat soup with sauerkraut, salted tomatoes and cucumbers, carrots and potatoes,
which is called "Щи" = "shchi" = "schtschi"
