It could be a possibility Bf109 Emil, since I believed that the 'YORKSHIRE man' got the image from Wikipedia, with no further infos as to "Dead german member of Waffen-SS". Here is the link : http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File: ... fen-SS.jpg

This boy is a Don Cossack who fought I believe with the Germans. The photograph was taken in 1944. A Russian reader tells us. In Russia thereis a term, "son a shelf". This is a boy who brings up shelfs. He/she is the general favourite and is surrounded by general attention, but brought up as the soldier. In a photo the young cossack the pupil 5 Don Cossack shelf." I don't entirely understand this comment. Perhaps a HBC reader will understand it better."

and how many of these allied soldiers where ORDERED to shoot prisoners after being captured? or in the case of Kurt Meyer
found guilty of “inciting and counselling” his troops to deny quarter, ordering the deaths of the seven prisoners shot in the abbey garden, and being “responsible for the killing of prisoners of war” in the deaths of 23 Canadian soldiers
are their any examples in Bevors book where crimes committed where not individual or isolated but where indeed committed by troops ordered to do so :?
I don't propose to reread all 523 pages having just finished it but I can assure you the examples of Allied atrocities are quite numerous in the book. Indeed it is surprising that they seem to be more numerous than those by the Germans. I wasn't keeping a score card, it is just an impression from reading the book.

There seem to be two elements. One is the order to "take no prisoners". I'm not sure whether that is always against the laws of war. But if it is, then Beevor cites quite a few examples. Then there is the situation of German soldiers having been taken prisoner and then killed either immediately or on their way back to the holding pens. Again plenty of examples in Beevors book. Some would be just individual groups of soldiers but there is also a flavour of the practice being condoned of up to staff officer level. Clearly that attitude was strongest against the Waffen SS, but the point is not every SS man was a war criminal. Shooting all SS prisoners indiscriminately makes you a butcher too.

Here are a few examples:
p.106 re Omaha, Beevor writes .."there were cases of illegal killings mainly prompted by the violence of repressed fear and a desire for revenge after so many fellow soldiers had been killed."
P119 re Utah , Beevor writes "A soldier in the 8th Infantry Regiment recorded that their officers had ordered them to shoot any SS soldiers they captured"
p208 cites an incident where 101st Airborne troops tried to get at German prisoners
at a stockade"Turn them over to us, we know what to do with them!"

Of course the Germans did similar things plus of course atrocities against civilians such as at Oradour sur Glane. We all know about that. My point is that this is the first time I have read openly about the scale of Allied illegal killings.

I recommend that you read the book, then you would understand my cynicism about the whiter than white version of history.
