In the POST A REPLY box press Ω button between the Font Colour and map buttons.
There you can pick up the letter you need outside your keyboard.

I have a couple updates.

The first has to do with confirmed unit his brother Friedrich served in:
Alfred (who is the subject of this post) had a brother who died in the war named Friedrich Neumann. No information was known about him, and he was not in the database of fallen soldiers. I wrote to the Berlin war agency and got the following information it may be relevant with them being brothers and from the same town. Friedrich was in the 83rd Infantry Division, in the 7th Company of Grenadier-Regiment 277. He is listed as missing in action on 16 Jan 1943 in Velikiye Luki, Russia. This leads me to believe he was a POW because that is the same day that Germany surrendered to the Soviets. From what I understand a garrison of a few thousand Germans were encircled and the 277 Regiment was one of the groups that were attempting to hold their ground in the town until reinforcements arrived.

The second, on closer inspection in the photo attached to this post of Alfred wearing the German tunic, I believe there is a "10" clearly visible on the shoulder button. Not sure if anyone can use that to help piece together that unit or company within the narrative of being recruited in the Sudetenland. Thanks!!

Update

I sent away to the German War department about a year ago and got a reply back. Alfred the subject of this post served in the following areas below. Someone pointed out due to his age he was most likely a replacement soldier which it looks like he was. Here is the info. Just wanted to close this out.
He was a Sudetenland German absorbed into the Wehrmacht in 1940. What I take is he was a bicycle cavalry and then a replacement soldier who most likely was called to the front line because of the losses incurred as Operation Barbarossa hit winter and the Russians started to push back into 1942 spring/summer. I assume he was killed in some phase of the Battle of Rzev/Operation Mars assault from the Russians. The time frame matches with Operation Wirbelwind. Please feel fee to interpret this better if any experts can understand it better. Couple things I don't understand is the mention of Stammlager XIA in 1941 and it also shows one date of 31.03.1942 as Kriegswehrmachts gefangnis Brussel-St Gilles. From what I understand this was a Prison. but days later he's shown in Battalion 398. Anyway, any info anyone would like to share, please do. Thanks again for all your help.

Hello Ju187
By coincidence, a friend came to this forum. It told me that someone is looking for alfred neumann. I had done it once before a few years. But I only got the answer, where he had fallen, and on which he was buried cemetery. He was my grandfather. My mother's father. When I showed her the two photos that you've posted here, she was totally surprised. She recognized him. One photo always hung in the living room with my grandma. I hope we can share even further. would be very happy. There are still so many questions. because maybe you can help me a bit. or maybe I can ask you to answer a few open from you. Looking forward to your response

Confusion about Alfred's place of death comes from the fact that his unit - 31.Inf Div - was moved from near Juchnow to Temkino on the 14th of August 1942 to stop Soviet attack towards Wjasma.

German map from 18th of August shows 31.ID location between Wjasma-Kaluga rail line and Worja river.

Detailed map shows Olenino, between Stepaniki and Paschino, near Worja river.

Thank you for the post of maps. Unfortunately, my English is not so good, so I have to work with a translation program. It's so great that so many people deal with this issue. Unfortunately, I know me in this forum is not as good as everything is in English. I would strongly contact with the Member JU187 take me to exchange times. Can anyone produce this contact me? I do not know how I can write to a member of a private mail. THANK YOU for your help.

Hi manu895,

you just need to click on the bubble at "Contact" below his avatar and then to choose what you want to write. Private Message which he will get in this forum or an E-mail.
You might also use this link to his profile and use the links there:

Based on the fact that JU187 was the last time active here in the forum in July 2014 I would suggest to write an E-mail.

Hi history1,
many thanks for the message. I'm about to try to write an e-mail. I've also seen that JU187 some time was no longer active in this froum already. Become a try. Maybe I'll be lucky. Best wishes and thank you:-)

Quote him in your comment or write to him yourself. That way he gets an easily visible notification.

It is unlikely that he will read a random, many years old topic by chance.

It seems he hasn't been online since 2017, so you should ask the administrators to send him your message.
