How were hill numbers chosen? i keep reading things like "the germans held hill 364 which was a cruical defence point", "the struggle for hill 825 went on for 3 days" etc.

It was just the height measured from the sea level (sea height?). The battle for the Mount Everest would have been the battle for Hill 8.847 or 8.848.

Of course it probably made a difference which country made the maps as to whether the measurement is in feet or meters too... at least in WWII
