Adressing of Privates in the Wehrmacht/Waffen SS
Adressing of Privates in the Wehrmacht/Waffen SS
We have all seen the American war movies where the superior officers adress their privates as "Private <name>" or simply "Private".
How did the officers in the Wehrmacht/W-SS adress their privates?
I've seen many translations of 'Private' on WW2 sites, some suggest 'schütze' and another suggested 'mann'.
Where they simply on last name basis, or did they use "Schütze <name" ?
Regards.

Hello!
It depended on the arm of service.
Schütze, Kanonier, Flieger....or just Soldat during coloquial conversation.

Of course you can say "Mann" to a soldier when referring to him not directly. For example "Die Kompanie hatte 100 Mann und 20 Unteroffiziere" (The compay had 100 men and 20 NCO´s)
BUT if you address a soldier in a dialogue like "Schütze Meier Ihre Schuhe sind dreckig!!!" (Private Meier your boots are dirty!) it would be impossible to use Mann.
And he asked for addressing a soldier.
