To illustrate the difference between mobs and Armies, Germany concentrated on creating a system of Military Practice.
The futility of WW 1 Bayonet Charges , and Trench Warfare prompted a number of ideas to avoid repeating such costly attacks over and over with no thought other than follow orders to attack again in massed formations.
Germanys Tactics in WW 1 , were innovative , considering rigid military controls of the time, The Germans developed Machine Guns Nests, Super Heavy Artillery that was thought impossible to produce, using new metallurgical methods beyond the brass cannon . After the heavy losses, the Germans began using Strosstruppen , of Small Groups of Storm Troops to infiltrate behind the lines using terrain folds and any other advantages terrain or otherwise to advance, such as moving short distances at a time and even using Allies own Trenches, "IMPOSSIBLE".
German Reserves were also heavily committed in an attempt to achieve the decisive breakthrough, "UNTHINKABLE"
The same problems however thwarted each try for the same reasons, unending bombardments made the terrain almost impassable and the assault troops became exhausted traversing the unpheaval, craters, making only modest changes in the front line positions.
