These last few photographs are of men, either just returned from, or still in action. They may not have had neither time, nor water, to shave .

It is my understanding that, in Afghanistan, beards are a revered sign of manhood. A grown man who is clean-shaven is viewed by the locals as childlike or feminine, and therefore weak. To gain the respect of the natives in Afghanistan and - more-importantly - to retain an air of authority among them, the Coalition allows, or even strongly encourages the men of its ranks to grow facial hair. Coalition troops wearing beards is a matter of the men adapting to the culture of Afghanistan more than it is a personal preference by individual soldiers.

I don't know if this qualifies, however, colourised B/W image of a POW taken after the Normandy Landings according to the LIFE caption, he's got a beard

This is intereseting one : Two brothers, serving in the Luftwaffe as Observers ( Flight crew.) Both showing that beards and moustaches could be and were an accepted standard during WW2, regardless of rumors to the contrary....
